Filofax Exotic - Personal

Filofax recently released a limited edition in personal and compact size called the Exotic.  Philofaxy was very lucky to be sent a Personal size Exotic to review and giveaway by our friends at Appelboom in the Netherlands.

The Filofax description describes it as follows:
Vintage inspired and exquisitely hand finished, the Exotic Organiser is made from Italian crocodile print deluxe leather. This stylish Personal organiser features internal pockets, pen holders and an expandable full height pocket with leather closure.
So we will take a detailed look at this new model.

The organiser is wrapped in the now typical clear plastic wrapper, which of course is easily removed. The inserts are in cotton cream.

So without the wrapper you can see the detail of the crocodile print leather, which has a soft sheen to it.

The pattern continues around the spine where there is a straight seam and the traditional 'f' at the base of the spine.

The back cover has a similar pattern to the front.

Opening it up it doesn't quite lay flat out of the box, but it might soften up with age. The organiser is fitted with 23 mm internal diameter rings.

On the inside front cover we find the first of two pen loops these are leather elasticated ones. There are four vertical card slots as well as a full height slip pocket behind this section. You will notice the patterned leather is complemented by plain brown lambs leather on the interior.

On the inside back pocket there is an expanding flap covered pocket all in leather of course. And the second of the two pen loops, like the other it is in leather and it is elasticated.

Here we see a slightly different view of the interior of the Exotic. It is really good to see Filofax fitting two pen loops to a personal size organiser again. I hope we see this in other new models. I know a lot of people have asked for this additional pen loop.

Overall I think this might be a popular model. Filofax UK have this model priced at £125 for both the Personal and Compact models. Appleboom have them for €169 for both Personal and Compact

Here is a video of the personal size:

and another of the compact size which you will see is of a different design, but the same price.

On the Compact model, instead of a clasp it has a large flap and popper. There is an outside zipped pocket in the back cover. And an additional a full height pocket behind the flap pocket accessed from the outside edge. There is only a single elasticated pen loop on the compact model and in common with other compact models the ring size is reduced to 15 mm internal diameter.

Once again thank you to Joost Appelboom for supplying the review sample.

Would you like to own the Personal size Exotic shown in this post? You would.... leave a comment below this post and we will put the names in to a hat and make the draw on Friday 16th January.

The usual rules will apply... no cash alternative, the judges decision will be final, you must contact Steve within 48 hours of the announcement of the winner to receive this prize.

Thank you.

Competition now closed... The Winner has been decided... find out who it is tomorrow in Web Finds.

  2. This seems a step in the right direction. Two things I'm not sure about. First, how well the white "ageing" will last, if it will crack and flake. And second, related to the first, the stiffness of the leather. It looks similar to the Cuban which was beautiful leather but just too stiff to be practical. If the leather is as stiff on this, it would make it awkward to use, and might result in the white colouring coming away. Having said that, I like the inside. It's nice to see a protected pocket internally,on the right, like some of the much older models had. Also, I like the inner flap on the left, with that that small lip of fabric. It looks practical. Adding a wraparound flap on the compact may not be to everyone's taste but personally I like it. My Lefax has a wraparound flap, and it protects the edges of the pages from being smashed up, when it is in a bag, and it also gives more space for the pen, meaning that tabs don't get bent and disfigured. Quite an interesting choice, this one. Reviews like this are so useful, because I'd never buy something like this without being able to have a good look, close-up, at the finish, the pattern, etc, so high-resolution photos like these really help. Thanks, Steve.

  4. In Germany, RRP is 149€, which - surprisingly enough - , is a little bit cheaper than in UK. (Usually, it's the other way around!)

    I love the croc print!

  7. Love this planner. Reminds me a bit of the Enigma. Of course I would love to win one! From what I have heard, this model will not be available to purchase in the USA. We miss so many lovely models this way--such as the Lockwood.

  12. Excellent review Steve! I took advantage of the Filofax UK online discount 20% (sale20) just after Christmas and purchased both personal and compact sizes. I had no intentions of buying both but I was unable to find a London stockist for a preview, and I love both so will keep them.

I had gone from using a slimline Adelphi to the personal Exotic. My personal has yet to lay completely flat but that has never been an issue for me as in time I know it will do so. For me, it's the number of pockets, having the expanding flap covered pocket and two pen loops are a bonus. I like the feel texture of the leather and my personal is stuffed and I'm loving it. Wishing those who enter the competition the very best of luck, the Winner will not be disappointed!

  26. Gorgeous! I have a pocket Filofax which I have had since about 2002 and would like to go to a personal size. Winning one would solve so many problems.

  27. This is one of those "growing-on-me" Filofaxes thanks in the main to the great review. A few months ago, when seeing just a glimpse, I wasn't sure. Now I love it! The two pen loops sell it for me. This is something so much needed, it seems. The back pocket reminds me of the Adelphi (pocket at the front). I wonder if being at the back it will lift the pages if over-filled. A beautiful and very stylish Filofax though. And the brown colour softens it beautifully. Black would have been a bit harsh for me.

  56. Steve - thanks for the review and the pictures.

I may not be very popular for stating this but I think this is one of the ugliest binders Filofax has produced for a very long time. For example, the seam on the spine and the clashing patterns of the closure flap with the front cover are particularly unappealing.

For me, this seems to highlight the dilemma Filofax finds itself in - form or function, fashion item or personal organisation tool? I guess Filofax thinks it can do both with products like this, but if I needed a new binder right now, then this item would (sadly) lead me to looking at other manufacturers

  57. Beautiful organiser and thank you Steve for another excellent review

  58. I love this one much better than the one with the flap cover - that one reminds me of the Temperley Violet. Oh to win this beauty...

  75. This looks a LOT nicer than on the teaser photos from Filofax! I especially like the flap covered pocket in the personal size, which is great if you use a planner/wallet combination. But still: Why isn't this called The Giraffe?

  82. What a beautiful binder! I'm wondering if the back pocket flap has a snap or magnetic closure. If so, would that affect one's writing?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I can confirm it has a popper type snap not a magnetic closure, but being on the back cover I wouldn't have thought it would be too noticeable when writing on right hand side pages.

      Delete
  83. That is a beautiful organizer! I like the personal one over the compact only because I think I would stuff it too much and the popper would have too much pressure on it to hold it shut!
Thank you for the opportunity to win it!

  84. There was no time listed (that I recall) so I hope I'm not too late to enter. I love the pattern on this binder. Usually I don't go for croc-types, but I like this one. :)
